What we Treat
Chiropractors treat everything in the body that is related to movement. This includes joints, muscles, neves, tendons, ligaments and fascia. We are particularly specialised in treating the neck, the spine and the pelvis. We also treat elbows, wrists, shoulders, hips, knees and feet.
Below are examples of some commonly treated conditions. If you have any specific question please do not hesitate to contact us.

Neck Pain
Neck pain can arrive for a variety of reasons. The cause can be years of poor posture, an accident such as whiplash, the wear-and-tear of osteo-arthritis or it can be a consequence of some other injury elsewhere in the body.
Pain in the neck itself is sometimes associated with headaches, shoulder pain, and pain or heaviness in the arms and hands.
Our treatment is intended not only to reduce the immediate pain, but also to give you, the patient, control to minimise recurrences.
When establishing a diagnosis we look of course to the neck itself but also to the function of the body as a whole; the low back, hips and the rest of the body. Daily habits such as sleeping posture, work posture and sporting practices are also considered for possible improvement.
The key to success is an appropriate treatment plan for the individual patient.

Low Back Pain
Low back pain has always one of the most frequent problems for which patients consult our office.
The lumbar spine is made up of five vertebrae in the lower part of the back and plays a major role in supporting body weight, maintaining posture, and allowing movement such as bending and twisting. Because of its workload and constant use, this area is especially vulnerable to strain, irritation, and injury.
When treating the low back we need to consider also the hips, the knees, the feet. To keep your lumbar spine in good order, all of these components need to be working well.
Whether your goal is to wake up pain-free in the mornings, return to golf, or enjoy playing with your grandchildren, Chiropractic care should be able to help you on your road to improvement.

Headaches/Migraines
Headaches and Migraine are one of the most frequent reasons why patients consult a medical practitioner. Studies show that 15% of people suffer from migraine and 80% from recurrent tension-type headaches.
Since headaches are so common, many people have learned to live with the problem. At our clinic our experience has shown that this does not need to be the case.
There are no miracle cures, but many patients experience dramatic relief from problems that have plaqued them for years or even decades.
At our clinic we look, not only at the triggers, but also at the source of the problem. Thus can we establish an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment plan.

Sciatica
The Sciatic Nerve arises in the lower back and runs down the back of each leg. If this nerve gets compressed or inflamed a patient may feel mild tingling, dull ache, or a burning sensation in the leg. Sometimes, but not always, this is accompanied by pain in the low back itself.
Causes of such an irritation can include:
-
Disc bulge or disc herniad
-
compression due to tight muscles
-
scar tissue from old injuries
-
osteo-arthritis
At Brussels Chiropractic we are specifically trained to treat this condition. We have a loghistory of helping patients to recover without the need for surgery or invasive procedures.

Shoulder Problems
Shoulder pain may develop suddenly after a fall, sports injury, or heavy lifting, or it may occur gradually over time due to repetitive movements and poor posture. Common shoulder conditions include rotator cuff strains, tendon irritation, bursitis, impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, and joint sprains. In some cases, discomfort can also be linked to dysfunction in the neck or upper back, which may refer pain into the shoulder region.
Shoulder problems can be quite slow to heal. We use are shoulders so often that it’s so easy to irritate the injury. Furthermore, stress, posture and emotions can also be influencing factors.
To help with your shoulder issues we use a variety of treatment techniques including fascial manipulation, dry-needling and exercise therapy alongside the traditional chiropractic adjustments.

Knee Pain
Injuries of the knees are very common. Sometimes these arrive suddenly, like cruciate ligament tears and some meniscal injuries, and sometimes they build up over time, like Runner’s Knee and Jumper’s Knee.
What many people don’t realise is that many knee injuries are due to faulty movement of the ankles, hips or low back. When this is the case, the treatment cannot just be localised to the knee. At our Clinic we look at the movement patterns as a whole to establish the weak links that cause injury or recurrent irritation.
By utilising this approach some stubborn, knee-complaints can often be brought under control.

Osteoarthritis
Osteo-Arthritis that occurs with age is a normal process of wear-and-tear on the joints. It can however also affect younger patient who have had excessively heavy work or sporting activities.
Areas of the body that are often affected are:
-
Neck
-
Low back
-
Knees
-
Hips
-
Hands
-
Feet
While the aging process is not reversible much can be done to mobilise the joints, relax tight muscles and improve low back function. This helps to decrease in pain and improve the quality of life due to increased activity levels.

Inflammatory Arthritis
These can include:
-
Rheumatoid Arthritis
-
Ankylosing Spondylitis
-
Reiter’s disease
-
Psoriatic Arthritis
At Brussels Chiropractic our job is:
-
Diagnosis and medical referral if necessary
-
Pain relief from associated muscle strain
-
Prevention of secondary musculoskeletal problems
The chiropractic treatment will not cure the cause of inflammatory arthritis. However we can surely reduce the impact of the symptoms and help you move and feel as best you can.

Disc Hernia
"Hernia" is probably the word most feared by patients. It can sometimes be a serious debilitating condition but not always.
At Brussels Chiropractic, our focus is:
-
An accurate diagnosis
-
Patient education and prognosis
-
Pain reduction as immediate as possible
-
Exercise and advice to maintain function within practical limits
-
Activity modification to minimise the chance of aggravating the initial injury
-
Prevention of secondary disorders
-
Monitoring of neurological signs
Our Chiropractors have trained either directly or with representatives from the World’s leading research and clinical experts including Dr Stuart McGill, Craig Liebensen and Robin McKenzie.

Hip Conditions
Many patients who visit us for hip problems are elderly patients suffering from osteo-arthritis. This is a common complaint, and while the aging process is not reversible much can be done to mobilise the hips, relax tight muscles and improve low back function. This often leads to a decrease in pain and improvement in quality of life due to increased activity levels.
However many hip problems begin much earlier in life. Hip problems are very common in young children and can lead to dysfunctions with crawling and walking which can give further problems later in life.
The modern trend of sitting for office work leads to shortened muscles at the front of the hips and weakened muscles in the buttocks. Tightness in the hip can lead to strain on the back. Hip instability leads to damaging torsion of the knee.
Traumatic hip complaints are also quite common, sometimes seemingly minor sports injuries become chronic complaints. As a general rule, if pain due to sports lasts more than a week then it has the potential to be a significant problem.

Our Philosophy
A lot of problems don’t have to be permanent. However, they don’t always just go away by themselves.
Generally patients wish to:
-
Decrease Pain
-
Improve Function
-
Minimise Recurrence
The first step is to establish an accurate diagnosis and agree on a treatment plan that is suitable for a particular patient.
