Arthritis

Arthritis, meaning Joint Inflammation, can take certain forms

  • Acute Inflammatory Arthritis
  • Osteo-Arthritis, associated with aging or over-use
  • Inflammatory Arthritic Conditions

Acute Inflammatory Arthritis

This can be caused by bacterial infection or by gout.

Symptoms include:

  • Quick onset of severe pain in one or more joints
  • One or more joints are suddenly red, hot and swollen

Bacterial joint infection is considered a medical emergency. In this case immediate medical attention is necessary. A check-up with our Chiropractors may be appropriate after the necessary medical care has been performed.

Osteo-Arthritis

Osteo-Arthritis that occurs with age is a normal process of wear-and-tear on the joints. It can however also affect younger patient who have had excessively heavy work or sporting activities.

Areas of the body that are often affected are:

  • Neck
  • Low back
  • Knees
  • Hips
  • Hands
  • Feet

While the aging process is not reversible much can be done to mobilise the joints, relax tight muscles and improve low back function. This often leads to a decrease in pain and improvement in quality of life due to increased activity levels.

Inflammatory Arthritic Conditions

These can include:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Reiter’s disease
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Lyme Disease

For some of these conditions patients should be in contact with family doctor and receive appropriate medical treatment.

At Brussels Chiropractic our job is:

  • Diagnosis and medical referral if necessary
  • Pain relief from associated muscle strain
  • Prevention of secondary musculoskeletal problems

Whilst many patients with inflammatory conditions are suitable for regular Chiropractic treatment, care is always taken to consider what is appropriate for a particular patient. Sometimes patients would not receive Chiropractic Adjustments for particular joints. In such cases gentler forms of treatment are considered.
